We are Home Assistants West Norfolk Support, or Hawns as most people know us.

We are different from many home help providers in that we don’t believe in an ‘in and out’ service. Our trusted and Enhanced DBS checked professional team takes the time needed to provide quality support which improves the lives of those we help.

We do this because we know the difference it makes to have a friendly person arrive on time and to build a strong relationship which helps to make their day easier and leave a smile on their face.

Based on companionship and practical help, we can take care of shopping and cooking, transport to appointments and hospital visits, fulfil prescriptions, cleaning and many other tasks. Just as importantly, we have time to talk, enjoy a cuppa together and alleviate the loneliness that many people feel.

We build confidence and are proud to have supported many clients to regain their independence and get their lives back after years of living with anxiety or dependency. We provide all kinds of support, offering a welcome respite for carers, and can tailor a plan to meet your needs.

Home visits

Available daily, weekly or as frequently as required, our team can help to support independent living and provide peace of mind for family and friends. Personalised to you, we can come when you get up, shop for and help you prepare meals, tidy the house or as you go to bed, the choice is yours. We can also help to keep on top of daily life with cleaning, laundry, looking after pets and popping the bins out so you don’t have to worry about the housework.

Companionship

We’re not just here for the practical stuff. We know how isolating it can be at home when you are unable to get out and about, and our carefully matched team member can visit regularly to spend time chatting and enjoying activities, whether it’s playing a game, reading the paper or simply watching TV together, we’re here to ease loneliness.

Out and about

Need help getting around? Whether you fancy a coffee, browsing the High Street or need to fill the fridge with a food shop, our team are fully insured to drive you or take you to appointments, medical visits or the pharmacy. Many of our clients also love a day out, so if it’s fish and chips on the sea front or a favourite club you love to attend, we can get you there and safely home afterwards.

Respite breaks

We are also here to help carers and provide a respite break for those looking after loved ones after an illness or accident, or regular breaks each week for those taking care of someone living with a long-term condition. Our team can help with activities or days out to provide carers with a much-needed break.

About us

Founded by Jay Coffey, Hawns supports a wide variety of clients across Norfolk. Following a career in the Armed Forces, Jay worked in social care and saw firsthand the difference that quality time and attention made to those he worked with.

Over the following decade, he and his team have supported people from all walks of life and helped many of them, often at their lowest ebb and when others would not step in, to transform their lives with compassion and without judgement.

With a core team of professionals, carefully selected for their enthusiastic, compassionate and dependable personalities, Hawns supports clients at every stage of adult life who need help living with physical and mental health problems, developmental disability and in later life.

Our clients and our team are fully protected by our top level Public Liability Insurance and Employers Liability Insurance.

Jay Coffey

Hawns’ managing director Jay Coffey served in The Welsh Guards, Wales’ senior infantry regiment. After leaving the army, he completed Levels 2,3 & 5 in Health and Social Care Management, England and Wales, with the Open University while working in care. Spotting a gap in the market for a domestic help business to support people with a wide spectrum of needs, Home Assistants was formed in 2011. Renamed as Hawns in 2022, its expert team provides assistance to clients across Norfolk.

Amanda Gilbert

After a career in banking and latterly working in education, Amanda Gilbert joined Hawns in 2016 as manager and support worker. “No two days are the same, and helping vulnerable adults in their daily lives is the most rewarding job – I enjoy working with clients and seeing them enjoy themselves and gain confidence with the support of our team.”
